Lithics‘ “Wendy Kraemer” EP will be issued on vinyl by Moone Records on February 7th of next year. Originally released on cassette by the Portland post-punk band for their 2017 tour, this upcoming 12″ vinyl pressing will be limited to 500 copies. Additionally, it will feature the cassette’s original artwork by Lithics’ bassist Bob Desaulniers.
While the band has two LPs under their belt, 2016’s Borrowed Floors (Water Wing Records) and 2018’s Mating Surfaces (Kill Rock Stars), the “Wendy Kraemer” EP was comprised of home demos, practice recordings, and assorted audio ephemera. The group’s tightly wound and wiry sound still sets these songs on a taut edge but by foregrounding their recording process and collaging the results, the EP takes on even artier dimensions.
“Wendy Kraemer” explores the distance between the “idealized” consumer product and one that is do-it-yourself and process-oriented. Presented as two long sides running near or just over nine minutes, the EP includes early versions of Mating Surfaces’ tracks like “Specs,” “Excuse Generator,” and “Edible Door.” Desaulniers’ propulsive bass-lines criss-cross guitarist Mason Crumsley and Aubrey Hornor‘s itchy, intricate guitar lines, while Hornor tersely interrogates consumer-culture with wry, imagistic lyrics.
Lithics’ “Wendy Kraemer” EP is currently available for pre-order via Moone Records.
