…Cause Tower doesn’t have that “indie record store smell”.
V/A Last Kind Words 1926-1953 [Mississippi Records]
The halcyon days of obscure old blues 78’s being reissued on LP has long passed. It’s all available as 0’s and 1’s these days. That is why it is such a delight to see this LP. A lovely folk art cover (reminiscent of Jacob Lawrence) houses a fine selection of old time blues. Geechie Wiley, Blind Willie Mctell, Rev. Edward Clayborn, Lottie Kimbrough and more are here to take your blues away.
Sir Richard Bishop / All Strung Out [Self Released CDR]
So this is a limited edition CDR available only at Wall of Sound or from Mr. Bishop himself. Yep. And oh my it is another virtuoso display of six string prowess from our favorite troubadour mystic. Includes a wonderful raga-esque work out on the mysterious Orietone. Limited copies on hand so grab one now!
V/A White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s [Fledg’ling]
A companion CD to the recently published autobiography of legendary producer Joe Boyd. Tracing the story of Boyd’s production work in London during the swinging sixties where he worked with the who’s who of British psych and folk rock artists. A great introduction to the likes of; The Incredible String Band; Johnny Handle; Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy & Diz Disley; Pink Floyd; The Purple Gang; Soft Machine; Fairport Convention; Shirley Collins; Nick Drake; Fotheringay; Mike Heron; Vashti Bunyan; John & Beverley Martyn; The New Nadir; Dudu Pukwana & Spear; Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath; Nico; Geoff & Maria Muldaur.
Susumu Yokota / Wonder Waltz [Lo]
Eschewing (for now) his trademark ambient soundscape collages, Yokota works the subtle beats for a wonderful waltz. Joined by vocalists Iva Bittova and Kahimi Karie, Yokota turns in a solidly skewed abstract pop offering. Pretty and delicate with subtle sonic surprises that keep your ears guessing what might happen next. Niceness.
Metaliic Falcons / Desert Doughnuts [Voodoo-EROS]
Metallic Falcons consists of Sierra Casady (CocoRosie) and Matteah Baim (Voodoo-EROS), as well as a crew including Devendra, Antony, and Jana Hunter. This is one of those records that is so epic and impossibly eerie and chilling, it must be heard to be believed. We didnt write that last sentance, we actually havent listened to it yet. But it seems like the sort of thing that a) should be checked into and b) perhaps best at home and late at night?
