Buying indie is sexy. Do it because or in spite of.

V/A Lagos Chop Up: Fuji & Afrobeat, Highlife & Juju [Honest Jons Records]
Fans of Fela Kuti, Konono ..1, and that lovely Luaka Bop Loves a Real Thing African psych/funk compilation… please sit up! Now you have another CD for the joy of summer. And dancing about. Especially since it is incredibly long (just under 80 minutes). Thats all were going to say. Come in and read the liner notes. There are a few new genre terms to learn… combinations of marching band, traditional folk, dance band, soul, funk, Christian hymns, and Muslim prayer chants. Whew!

Charalambides / A Vintage Burden [Kranky]
Delicate, intricate guitar work turning circles, layers of melody and vocal loops… from an easy chair on the front porch watching spring rain fall kind of a sound. Yes, this is what the fuss is about. Tom and Christina Carter return to more traditional (relatively) forms.

Boards of Canada / Trans Canadian Highway [Warp]

This E.P includes one song from Campfire Headphase and an Odd Nosdam remix of said tune. The rest is trademark BoC, with clouds of analog melody, shuffle happy drum programming, and deep restless synth tone colors.

Skullbot / S/T [Self Released]
What do you do while growing up in Stanwood, Wa? You start a kick ass heavy-duty rock band that’s what! Jason and Derek Palaniuk (guitar/drums) and their bass playing buddy Garrett Zipp open up a can of power trio whoop ass on the Northwest. Need some comparisons? Think Nebula, High on Fire, or early Mudhoney.

V/A Soul Gospel [Soul Jazz]
In this second volume of Soul Gospel, Soul Jazz Records once again brings you celebrated gospel artists such as The Staple Singers, Clara Ward, and Marion Williams. As well as many lesser known gospel artists like The Sensational Cymbals and The Lovers of God, who you’re unlikely to find mentioned in any discography of gospel or soul music. All the artists on this album grew up in the church and their music includes the emotional and spiritual depth and soaring vocals of what would become the defining ingredients of gospel’s secular counterpart — soul music. Funk, soul, New York disco and more combine.

V/A Lagos Stori Plenti (Urban Sounds From Nigeria) [Out Here Records]

So this is a collection of Nigerian hip hop. Youll hear some unmistakable mimicry of American chart toppers (Eminem in particular). But the lyrics are the killer. And yes, in English. Diatribes against governmental corruption, calls for booty shakin, and declarations of Nigerian pride figure prominently. Hippity-hoppity!

Keith Fullerton Whitman / Track 4(2waysuperimposed) [Room 40]

Over the past few years, Keith Fullerton Whitman has been responsible for proucing some of the most engaging electronic music to emerge from the United States. Informed by traditional musique concrete as much as contemporary DSP, his work remains provocative without relying on overt actions or grandiose sonic statements. A bass heavy journey through processed guitar and electronics. Of course we think you should turn it up.

Forthcoming:
Psapp, Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid, Camera Obscura, Mojave 3, Zero 7, Amon Duul II, Oakley Hall

Also in Stock:
Can reissues, Golden Apples of the Sun compilation reissue, Nino Moschella, live Melvins, Espers, Vetiver, Boris, Gnarls Barkley, Scott Walker, Jamie Lidell remixes, Wax Tracks
