Again this month, we cleaned up our desk, and look at all the killer videos we found. For the song “Phantom Limb”, The Shins and director Patrick Daughters roll out a video of beautifully shot stage-tableaus on which kids act out some of the more violent scenes in history (the Crusades, Columbus’ landing, Joan of Arc). Kinda like a really graphic school play all about how horrible humans can be, complete with a paper-mache cow gettin’ it’s head cut off. For real, it’s all Apocalypse Now. Check it out!
It seems that the The Oxford Collapse live in a simpler, more pastoral place, where it rains cassette tape and docile beasts lick a canary yellow Walkman. And me thunks they was city boys!? The video is for the song, “Please Visit Your National Parks” off their Sub Pop debut, Remember the Night Parties, and it’s a great way to meet the boys…just don’t step in any sheep shit along the way! Oh yeah, they tell me this video was directed by Michael. Hmmm, smells like friend of the band.
Are you onto this Chad VanGaalen guy yet? You know, one of those true genius types that makes all the wanna-be’s cringe when they realize, by comparison, their production totals that of a mosquito fart. Sorry guys, you know who you are; but anyways, you should really check this dude out, you know he’s already written enough music to fill his first 10 albums, dude lives in that awesome country north of us (and I bet he even chops his own firewood), he makes his own instruments like violins, etc., as well as drawing the most minding bending animations, like these for the video “Flower Gardens”, on his newish album Skelliconnection…
Too bad Canada just keeps kickin’ our ass, and if that wasn’t bad enough, The Constantines gotta come along and show us what pussies we really are, using all our old tricks in new ways. Damn, guys that hurts! What are you gonna do next, make us give Neil Young back? Anyways, “Working for a Living” might just be the kick you need to get your fat ass of the couch and doin’ somethin’. Yeah, your right, just sit there and watch those rocks move…
And lastly, from our favorite little label in Seattle, some videos from those super sexy Brazilian kids, CSS! Ya okay, I read all those bad reviews, talkin’ about “maybe half an album there”, but I don’t listen to albums, I just watch music videos, so “who cares”! That means the videos are good. In fact, I gotta give “Alala” Best Video of Whatever Month They Sent It To Me. I’m sure they will be excited and write a song about it…
This month from Matador/4 AD…Basement Jaxx and The Early Years. The Basement Jaxx are pop wizards, what they touch is “quality”. The videos rule because they always got the Basement Jaxx Dancers doin’ some far out freaky shit. This time they get all Communist on us and celebrate the Soviet inside!! Disco plus baby…The Early Years play their song in a room. Way to go guys!
And to wrap up, one more reason to love the Northwest, seminal indie label K Records. A couple oldies but goodies from old time relijun, and Mirah. You know, videos of the “animated sort”…That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more irregularly scheduled programming!
