The Ruby Suns released their stellar album, Sea Lion, on Sub Pop this past March, and it is a beautiful and sunny affair from musical gypsy Ryan McPhun and cohort Amee Robinson. Fleeing the monotony of southern California’s metal domination, McPhun travelled through Asia and Africa with a keen appreciation for the OTHER melodies and rhythms of the world; and upon settling in New Zealand and establishing himself in its burgeoning music scene, McPhun began to re-assemble what he’d heard into his own basement brew of world music, with a serious 60’s psychedelic bent. Sea Lion glistens and crackles through space echo, and bangs congo rhythms and dreaming harmonies against sun soaked melodies, weaving a heartfelt paen to travel and the beauties of the natural world.
Thanks to Nada Mucho Live Eye Tv had the good fortune to catch up with the Ruby Suns this October at The Mars Bar in Seattle. The band was enjoying a little R&R, and gearing up for a big European tour, so this show, with it’s intimate environment and all kinds of friends around, was like, oh, a basement session of the basement sessions! Dig It!
