Andrya Ambro and Sarah Register’s tense and haunted Sugarland record is a riveting storm of guitar, drum, and noise, with the duo often delivering lyrics in maniac call and response. Highly recommended viewing for those with a deep No Wave itch for bands like DNA, The Slits, Ut, or more recent efforts from Erase Errata…

This month our Mixtape Podcast features mostly new releases for March and April so go buy some records!!
With his punk band Heatmiser enjoying success in the early nineties, Elliot Smith made a tape of his most recent songs for Portland’s Cavity Search Records. Played on a borrowed guitar and recorded on a borrowed four-track, the songs that were to become Smith’s first solo album, Roman Candle, continued to reveal the young songwriters genius for naked confessional while earning him eternal tenure in the Lonely Hearts Club Band. On April 6th Kill Rock Stars will reissue Roman Candle and From a Basement on the Hill, with this being the first state-side release of Roman Candle on vinyl.

Dum Dum Girls release their first LP I Will Be on Sub Pop this coming April. Since releasing a home-recorded CD-R on her label Zoo Music, main Dum Dum Girl Dee Dee has taken her solo project from the bedroom and filled it out into a full band. Since 2008, the band has released a number of interesting records including a 7″ on HoZac Records and a 12″ EP on Captured Tracks. The newest, I Will Be, was produced by Richard Gottehrer (The Voidoids, Blondie, and the Go-Gos), and includes this fuzzed out and groovey cover of The Raveonettes, song, “Heart of Stone”.

Thurston Moore’s third solo album Trees Outside the Academy is not exactly new, but the track “Frozen Gtr” was included on the recent Other Music SXSW digital sampler. The song contains violin work from psych/folk artist Samara Lubelski, and was recorded at J Mascis Bisquiteen Studio. Thurston collaborates with a host of interesting musicians on this album including John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man), Christina Carter (Charalambides), Canadian musician Andrew Macgregor (Gowns), as well as Mr. Mascis himself!

HEY BUDDY, MORE MUSIC INSIDE
My Education‘s fifth full length, Sunrise, began as an original score for F.W. Murnau‘s 1927 silent masterpiece “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans”, and continues the bands skyward journey with soaring, highly accomplished, instrumental soundscapes. Having added viola, piano, vibraphone and cello to the mix, the band creates dark, majestic melodies which guitarists Chris Hackstie and Brian Purington shred into cosmic shards of aural bliss. Their album Moody Dipper had remixes by some of our favorite post-rock, sky trippers Kinski, Red Sparrowes, and Teith.

Male Bonding‘s motto, “I like it-shall we try it a little faster” means their first full length on Sub Pop, Nothing Hurts, clocks in at about a half hour with lurching and shambling guitar hooks blurring by at blazing speeds. Like a house party stuck on fast forward, the band started in 2008 in the London neighborhood of Dalston with a lo-fi D.I.Y. aesthetic, and have since released a bunch of 7″ with other noise popsters like Eat Skull, Graffiti Island, Old Blood and Cold Pumas.

What more can we say about Talk Normal? This noisy Brooklyn duo create an almost suffocating maelestrom that reminds one of early Lydia Lunch, PJ Harvey, or Kim Gordon‘s rendition of “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. Obsessive!

Necro Deathmort smash up all kinds of genres on their Distraction Records release, This Beat Is Necrotonic. Hard to tell what you really got here, and we like that. The overarching mood is tom fuckery with heaping ladle-fulls of busted up beats and black metal atmospherics making a mad soupy mess of heavydelic, breakbeat fun. If you like this tune we recommend you go to their myspace to check out “Token Necro Song”, where the duo mash up Bleach-era Nirvana with their bare hands…

Woven Bones will put out their first LP for HoZac Records, In and Out and Back Again on May 16th. Covered in scum and throbbing with a medicated heart beat, Andy Burr’s snarling drawl completes a completely degenerate scene!

We are eagerly awaiting the April 6th release of The Sight Below‘s newest LP on Ghostly International, It All Falls Apart. The Sight Below is Seattle-based, post-classical composer Rafael Anton Irisarri, and for this project the artist creates slowly simmering and soaring scapes of sound using laptop, and guitar played through a series of reverb boxes and delay units. The new album features music co-written with former Slowdive member Simon Scott, and it contains this dark gem, a cover of Joy Division’s “New Dawn Fades”, featuring vocals from Jesy Fortino of Tiny Vipers.

Kleenex/LiliPUT were a 70’s era, all- female punk band out of Switzerland with several long out of print and expensive records on Rough Trade. The band garnered early praise with John Peel becoming an important fan, as well as Robert Christgau in the states. On March 23rd Kill Rock Stars will be releasing a CD/DVD of live material from the band that will include, on the DVD, some really cool performances from the band on Swiss television.

Zola Jesus is the band name of Nika Roza Danilova, a diminutive 20 year old from Wisconsin trained in operatic singing, and looking and sounding every bit the part of the perfect, post-punk, goth music queen. Her new EP Stridulum is out on Sacred Bones Records, and it contains this great late night track…
