After a busy summer, here’s a round up of some of our favorite videos from the recent past! Spanish artist El Guincho’s newest album on Young Turks, Pop Negro, was the result, according to the artist, of a massive amounts of research into the production and recording techniques behind the,”…radio hits/big selling singles in North and South America, England and Spain in the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s.” The research turned up a small list of individuals responsible for engineering and producing many of these hits, and on Pop Negro, El Guincho pays tribute to his favs! It seems the album also has a feature film accompaniment called “Bombay” with a great 16mm vintage feel, full of the surreal and slightly naughty images you might find in a Jodorowsky film. Now that’s cool!CONTINUE READING

Continuing on the Spanish tip, we also have the breezy and ecstatic dance music of Delorean up this week with their second video, “Real Love”, off their Spring release Subiza on True Panther Sounds. This video was directed by Aaron Brown and Ben Chappell, who have a great intimate style with their direction and shooting, as also evidenced on the two videos they did last year for the Girls! This one’s very dog-centric. Enjoy pooch-hounds!
Dare I say it, Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox is approaching Thom Yorke territory with his ability to write and craft painful, self-eviscerating pop music that you can’t help listening to. Have I gone too far, Radiohead fans? Maybe. But this is dark, alluring stuff. On “Helicopter”, off 2010’s Halcyon Days, Cox lays it on the line, puts it under the microscope, and finds out the insect dying on it’s back is himself!
This year saw Atari Teenage Riot reunited (after an extended hiatus and the death of long time member MC Chris Crack), and this fall Steve Aoki and Dim Mak announced that they would be releasing the band’s new single, “Activate”, with a full-length slated for release next year! In case you’ve forgotten what a violent maelstrom ATR was, you’re just in time to catch up the second time around. This week we have two Youtube clips full of killer live footage; one is the video for the new song “Activate!”, and is a montage of live show chaos, and the second their reunion at Fusion 2010. It’s a digital hardcore riot!!
Blonde Redhead spent over a year on their most recent album for 4AD, Penny Sparkle, working collaboritively and in new ways with various producers including Sweden’s Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid. The process challenged and changed their typical creative methods, and through the hard work the band has created an excellent album that moves them sonically into new territory. Their new video for the song, “Not Getting There” is directed by Timothy Saccenti, so that means sophisticated eye candy.
Esben and the Witch, named for a Danish fairy tale and hailing from Brighton, England, is Matador’s first UK signing in 6 years. On October 12th, the band released their first work for the label, a 12″ that includes “Marching Song”. Directors David Procter and Peter King capture the progressive brutality of this song in quite unsettling ways! Really a must see, and can’t wait for the full length coming out next year!
We’ve given you everything we could find from Sub Pop’s Dum Dum Girls because we love them, and we just think you should have it! This week, the video for the song “Bhang, Bhang, I’m a Burnout”. Ah, sexy seizures!
And to round it all up, the so finely mannered, good times of Belle and Sebastian. The band has a new album out called Write About Love and we have the video for the single, “I Want the World to Stop” directed by Blair Young. The band still knows it’s way around a song, moving with the urbane wit of a well seasoned Romeo, and in this video they ply us with all their charms!
