Several years back David Lynch eschewed his longstanding love affair with the medium of film choosing instead to work in the digital realm for his 2006 release, Inland Empire. I suppose, then, it’s only a short, slippery slope before we find him playing slide guitar and making demented music videos in his backyard. Well, in 2012, that’s exactly where we find him, having recently released his first LP Crazy Clown Time on Play It Again Sam, and now putting out a music video for the title track. Those familiar with the awesomely crude and limited animation of Lynch’s former on-line series Dumbland will find themselves on similar thematic ground, though this time using real people and a real backyard. All kinds of disturbing, B-film schlock follows…Did you know that David Lynch directed Michael Jackson’s 1992 video for “Dangerous”, as well as producing the Sparks 1982 video for “I Predict”?
Okay, so if you’ve been keeping up you’ve seen Holograms bleak and wintry video for “ABC City”, and have downloaded our last mixtape podcast which included the band’s new track, “Hidden Structures”. This week we have the video for that song, and it again provides an interesting window into Swedish life with it’s beat-up, old volvos, heavy drinking, and bleak, middle class cityscapes. You can find “ABC City” on 7″ from Captured Tracks with this punk gem, “Hidden Structures” on the B-side!
The English electronic duo and production team Simian Mobile Disco have an up-coming LP Unpatterns, due out May 15th on Wichita Recordings, and the recently released single “Seraphim” will be it’s opening track. The video for the song was directed by Aoife McArdle, and it presents a series of scenes in which people are seen dealing with their obsessive compulsive behaviors. The duo explains, “On our new album we’ve been inspired by ideas of repeated loops and patterns breaking down and decaying over time. And the process of making electronic music lends itself to obsessive-compulsive tendencies…” Tell that one to the doctor!
Crocodiles bubblegum trash-pop is quite infectious, and in the video for “Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)” you can see that they have their Jesus and the Mary Chain pose down. The band is from San Diego, and is sometimes associated with Sub Pop stars the Dum Dum Girls, as Crocodiles’ Brandon Welchez is married to the Dum Dum’s frontwoman, Dee Dee. The video for “Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)” was shot by Sam Macon at Radar Studios in New York, and it includes some 60’s style psychedelic compositing, very cool black and white graphic stylings, as well as a semi-clad female Jesus on a cross. Look for this track on the bands forth coming LP Endless Flowers, due out June 5th in the US on French Kiss Records.
Squarepusher is back at it with another wicked dose of acid techno on his up-coming May 15th release, Ufabulum, for Warp Records. “Dark Steering” is hyped-up jungle for androids, and the track’s madly intricate algorithms are so futuristic as to put the English artist Tom Jenkinson back again as the head of the class! And if being a musician of preeminent abilities wasn’t enough, Jenkinson has also designed a massive light show for his up-coming tour using thousands of LED lights. If you haven’t heard the hardcore, super-group Off!, it’s time to catch up! Started in LA in 2009, the band is comprised of Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba! After releasing several 7″‘s, the band has a self-titled full-length due out May 8th on Vice Records. “Wiped Out” will be the first single, and the video was directed by legendary film-maker and photographer Richard Kern. Skate or die!
Mux Mool juggles hyper-mutant funk on his 2012 Ghostly International release, Planet High School, while imagining our permanently foreshortened economic futures. The artist, Brian Lindgren explains, “Today, young Americans have very little to look forward to except endless war, endless debt, no Social Security, and the fact that none of us can live without the constant fear of poverty. We don’t need to have big houses and cars and a nest egg to get along. There’s nothing that says you can’t rent an apartment your whole life and not be happy.” The video for “Cash For Gold” is in that spirit presenting a peculiar form of “take this job and shove it”, and with Lindgren’s Skulltaste character coming to life to endow the video’s hero with super-human powers.
Death Grips continue their maniac sonic assault with a new LP, The Money Store, and word is we can expect a second record later this year! MC Ride’s blunt edged raps deliver schizoid damage, and with mad punk Zach Hill on drums and Flatliner on production, The Money Store places you at ground zero in our pre-apocalyptic, cultural nightmare! The video for “I’ve Seen Footage” will have you on visual overdose as it delivers a rapid onslaught of jpegs and movie snatches faster than the eye can see!
Gang Colours released their debut LP this year, The Keychain Collection, on Gilles Peters globe trotting label Brownswood Recordings. Like many of the Brownswood artists, Gang Colours have a peculiar sort of “soul” about them, but in this band’s case it is stripped back and understated, while being played against phasing beats and minimalist electronics. In the performance video for “A Fancy Restaurant” we see frontman Will Ozanne switching between playing on an old, stand-up piano as well as a sequencer, while occasionally crooning about making some money to take his girl out to a nice restaurant. For sure man, times is tight!
Hailing from Tooting, South West London, Dignan Porch started as a home recording project for the musician Joe Walsh. Early demos were quickly lauded by Rough Trade, Pitchfork, etc., so Walsh added a backing band that included his brother Sam on lead guitar, Hayley Akins on keyboard and vocals, Ben Goodwin on bass, and Stephen Keane on drums. With several recordings for Captured Tracks, including the EP Deluded already behind them, the band is getting ready for a new July release that is yet to be officially announced. To ease the wait, though, the band has released a video for the song “Picking Up Dust”, a little bit of classic 90’s lo-fi indie pop, fuzzy, and quirky around the edges! Just how we like it!
