New Music Video: My Education “Mister 1986”

1082

Fans of Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and soaring instrumental rock in general need to put Austin’s My Education on their musical map. Last year’s LP A Drink For All My Friends (Headbump Records) was the band’s sixth full-length since their inception in 1999. My Education’s cinematic music lends itself well to performance and film, and the band has collaborated with the Noble Motion dance company at the Austin ballet, as well as, more recently, the band’s “SoundMass” performances with Salt Lake City ensemble Theta Naught. Equally striking, however, is the new John Aasp directed video for the track “Mister 1986”. Aasp creates a 16mm look expertly mixing what seems to be old found footage with recently shot film of the band in the recording studio. Surreal juxtapositions of a 70’s-lookin dude practicing kung fu and shots of the band recording under the watch of a bizarre producer with a rabbits head play out sublimely, before giving way to a violent passage of disaster films, gun fights, and lightning in the Texas sky.
