Oakland four-piece Mwahaha and the Plug Research label have teamed up for an expanded release of the band’s psychedelic, self-titled debut, out today for the first time on vinyl with up-dated artwork. To celebrate, the band has made two of the album’s new tracks available for streaming. While the song “Swimmer“, recently featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered, demonstrates the band’s rock-oriented side exploring it’s psych interests, with band’s like Mercury Rev, Ween, or even the Flamming Lips coming to mind, the expanded cuts “Amba” and “Das Space” show off the band’s interest in heady, abstract electronics. While by track’s end “Amba” bears the closest resemblance to a rock song, “Das Space” goes intergalactic on remnants of Detroit Techno and some boogie down space funk to create one tripped out dance track! Mwahaha will open for Sigur Ros June 30th at the Eden Sessions in Cornwall, England, as well as playing two California dates in April. Check them out below.
