New Music: David Yow “Thee Itch”

634

Thirty-one years into making music and former Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow will be finally releasing his first solo LP, Tonight You Look Like A Spider, July 25th via the Joyful Noise label. Seems his efforts in that direction have been brewing since 1998 when a friend gave him a cursory understanding of the recording/mixing software Pro Tools. After a little encouragement from his other buddy, Mike Patton, Yow explains, ” I rented a saxophone for 2 months, I borrowed some guitars and some drums, I rummaged through the kitchen, I squeezed a fat cat, I poked and prodded and ended up with my very own music. It’s real good, if you like that kind of shit. I named it Tonight You Look Like A Spider after a spider I saw one night.” Unfortunately, the Deluxe “Monolith” version of this release has already sold-out, as it came with an actual cement vinyl-displaying-sculpture, created from the same mold pictured on the album’s front cover. All 50 of these will be handmade, numbered, and signed by Yow himself…Check out the track “Thee Itch“, which still finds Yow creating an extreme music full of tension and anxiety, but here we can hear just how far he has travelled since his days with The Jesus Lizard. Instead, “Thee Itch” exchanges that band’s visceral, punk rock pummeling for a nightmare atmosphere that seems almost inspired by dark, noir kinds of techno or even free jazz.
