New Music: Deerhunter “Monomania”

2459

Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Deerhunter premiered the title track to their up-coming May 7th 4AD release, Monomania. If you were watching, you saw a seemingly wrecked Bradford Cox performing as his alter-ego Connie Lungpin, complete with frowzy black wig, what looked like a bandaged and partially amputated finger, and vampire fangs. Cox closed the incendiary track by dropping his microphone and walking off set to the elevator, with camera following. Who better then to contemplate the subtle shades of grey difference between self-obsessed and monomaniacal! “Monomania” peels out of the garage on ear splitting shards of feedback, before hot rubber meets the hot road of Cox’s searing vocal delivery. By the track’s midway point, he has launched headlong into full freakout mode, repeating “monomania” over and over at car crash speeds, while chunks of guitar metal disintegrate layer by layer into white smoke and the gritty, literal revving of a motor! Let’s go muddin’!! Visuals provided by Robert Semmer.
