New Video: Barn Owl “Void Redux”

On their new Thrill Jockey LP V, the San Francisco duo Barn Owl continue to push their experimental approach into far out ambient territory. For the new recording Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti have added various electronics to the effected guitar set-up that they have normally used, for a sound that more closely approaches their concept of doom dub. Recorded last year in SF with Phil Manley at LCR, the duo used the new electronics to build the tracks on V layer by layer. The album’s opener “Void Redux” is a good example, dropping malevolent tones of slowly expanding doom and echoing abstracted beats into it’s alien, synthetic atmospheres, before the duo adds visceral guitar slashing and a spacey, dubbed out vocal line to close the track. The video for “Void Redux” was created by Paul Clipson and shot on Super 8 in Zagreb, Geneva and Berlin, and it provides a striking visual companion to the track by making brilliant use of collaged images that alternately bleed with golden sunlight and neon saturated night.
