Julia Holter‘s stunning 2011 debut Tragedy gets a vinyl-only release by Domino Records today. The 2xLP was initially released in two batches of 500 by the LA label Leaving Records, and Holter’s exemplary and unique work, inspired by Euripides’ Hippolytus, utilized an impressive palette of electronic and acoustic instrumentation that included, “voice, synths, drum machines, piano, cello, saxophone, samples, vocoders, ensemble musicians and a chorus”. Tragedy quickly sold out in it’s small runs, so it’s great to see Domino making it more widely available thru reissue. “Finale” demonstrates the completely magical touch Holter has for creating otherworldly musical spaces. The new video for the track was shot on Super 8 by Rick Bahto, and like much of her sonic work, this initial choice of an analogue medium means her work sets up an interesting interaction between organic and digital worlds. Using projections to further blur the lines between what is “real”, Holter still creates an intimate, dream-like experience! Don’t miss Julia Holter’s upcoming live dates listed below.
