Shabazz Palaces do a real number on Animal Collective‘s “New Town Burnout“, making the track very much their own in the process! While AC’s version seems to find vocalist Avey Tare dreaming of home, while returning from far-off travels to strange lunar jungles, home seems to carry a much more dubious connotation in the Shabazz Palaces’ version.
Ishmael Butler and Tendai ‘Baba’ Maraire strip “New Town Burnout” down to reveal an ominous menace at it’s core, complete with snare sounds that snap-off like a 9mm locking, and a bass drum that sounds like muffled knocking from the cops, it quickly becomes apparent “home” connotes a much different place, here. Maraire and Butler riff off of the original lyrics, while adding raps of their own, making for a very intriguing shift, and or rift, in the song’s perspective!
Look for Animal Collective’s remix EP Monkey Been to Burn Town to come out May 27/28th via Domino. The EP will include the above track, as well as remixes of “Monkey Riches” by Gang Gang Dance’s Brian Degraw, Chicago Juke producer Traxman, and New York underground dance producers Teengirl Fantasy!
