Deafheaven will release their new 2xLP Sunbather via Deathwish Inc. on June 11th. Written by Deafheaven’s primary members, vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, the duo added drummer Daniel Tracy for the recording, while working with producer/engineer Jack Shirley (Funeral Diner, Comadre) this past January to record the album. In discussing it’s title, Clarke has stated that it is meant to reference, “a wealthy, beautiful, perfect existence that is naturally unattainable and the struggles of having to deal with that reality because of your own faults, relationship troubles, family troubles, death, et cetera.”
Clocking in at over ten minutes, the title track is monstrous. “Sunbather” finds the band leaning less on black metal and more on post-rock for it’s colossal and often uplifting riffage, with Clarke’s vocals exceptionally powerful-seemingly an admonishment against all that is narrow minded, while also a rousing call to action against apathy and the urge to disengage. Deafheaven kick off their Sunbather tour tomorrow in San Francisco, playing three dates with Japanese metal gods Boris, before returning in June and July for dates around the country with Marriages!
