Looks like the time of total Vår is nearly upon us, but luckily that just means more interesting post-punk from Denmark! Originally called War, with a release on Sacred Bones titled At War For Youth, the band began as a 4-track recording project for Iceage’s frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, and Sexdrome’s Loke Rahbek. Since their first record, though, the duo has added Lukas Højland, and Lower’s Kristian Emdal, while punning off their first band name, and opting for the more verdant moniker, Vår. These lads are all part of Copenhagen’s burgeoning music scene, and Rahbek co-runs the label Posh Isolation, while playing in Skurv and with Damien Dubrovnik, while Rønnenfelt, besides singing and playing guitar with Iceage, is also a member of Marching Church and Pagan Youth.
The quartet’s newest LP No One Dances Quite Like My Brothers will be out May 14th, again via the Brooklyn label Sacred Bones. The cover art for the album will act as a mirror, as well as containing those ultra-fine SB graphic touches. As Rahbek explained, “The cover is a mirror and thus changes with whoever is holding it. Looking at it, you are the cover. Music to remind you to be as pretty as possible.”
In anticipation of the new record, this week the label made available “Into Distance“, a strong track that demonstrates the band’s eclectic approach to dark, brooding post-punk. Making the most of rolling snare and an acoustic guitar, while adding a trumpet to close the track, the vocals here really carry the day, seemingly dripping with punk’s history, while carrying forward it’s yearning to make something new again.
