The post-punk trio Weekend will release their new LP Jinx on July 23rd via Slumberland Records. The core of the band, long-time friends Shaun Durkan (vocalist/bassist/guitarist) and Kevin Johnson (guitarist), bonded over punk rock while still in junior high, and they started messing around with music before they could even really play instruments. Durkan and Johnson would go on to attend the San Francisco Art Institute, before dropping out a short time later, but not before meeting the drummer Abe Pedroza. By 2009 the three lads would get serious, recording their 2xLP Sports (Slumberland) over the course of a year with their friend, producer/engineer Monte Vallier. The albums success would lead to international tours with Wire and the Kills, a tour of Japan in support of their 2011 EP Reds (Slumberland), as well as heaps of praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, Vice and more. The band has since added the drummer Taylor Valentino to their line-up, and for the new LP Weekend returned to record with Vallier during 2012 at Ruminator Audio. Asked to describe Jinx, Shaun Durkan tersely offers, “Volatile. Cathartic. Bittersweet.” “It’s Alright” is the first single, and it comes blasting out the gate with malevolent strains of cold wave, before taking off for more shoe-gaze-like territory on buoyant, chiming guitar and Durkan’s alternately hazy and soaring vocals.
