New Music: Bloody Panda’s Yoshiko Ohara’s solo debut.

517

Yoshiko Ohara, best known as lead vocalist for the New York-based doom metal band Bloody Panda, has released her first solo album. Ringing In Our Wrists is an eight song tome of strange, dense beauty composed and recorded by Ohara, who also created the cover art for the album. There is little in these songs that seems intentionally rhythmic, melodic or even structured. Rather, Ohara explores the painterly aspects of sound, its textures, layering, and the way organic surprises arise from random juxtapositions. For example, there is a cinematic quality to the way she expands and shifts the backdrop sound in the track “Untitled“. The dense, atmospheric undercurrent is full of slow, droning rumbles that swell as murky angelic voices are layered and chopped till they resemble shards of singing. There are snipets of far off conversations, inaudible, that drift in and out of the landscape. The vast vistas of sound are periodically punctured by a clanging bell lost in the deep fog. This is a soundtrack for your dark night of the soul. Have a listen to the track “Untitled” off the album Rining In Our Wrists out now on Ice Level Music. Also, in August, Ohara has one upcoming show at Brooklyn’s The Acheron. Stop by if your in the neighborhood!
