Porcelain Raft returns on August 20th with Permanent Signal, his new LP coming out on Secretly Canadian. Seeking new sonic directions, Mauro Remiddi sold all of the musical gear he used to make his full-length debut Strange Weekend, so that he might start with a new color palette. In addition, Remiddi rounded out his band by adding Jonny Rogoff (Yuck) on drums, Darby Cicci (Antlers) on bass, and Gaspar Claus (Sufjan Stevens, The National) on cello. No longer just a solo affair, Porcelain Raft’s new single “The Way Out” bristles and buzzes with activity, sounding something like Helio Sequence covering The Flaming Lips, with Remiddi’s boy-ish vocals adding a sense of exuberance to the track’s mournful melody and bit-crushed beats. He says of the cut,
“I wrote “The Way Out” in New York during Hurricane Sandy. I was walking home, keeping my head down because of the rain. I noticed on the sidewalk that all of the trees had their roots growing throughout the pavement. Nature couldn’t be held back by cement. I started to notice mold on the walls of buildings and the stains it created, and realized it didn’t matter how many times we paint the walls white, nature will always stain them again, and the stain will grow bigger with time. The vision of it makes you surrender”.
