Richard Buckner‘s upcoming LP Surrounded comes out September 3rd on Merge Records, and today we have the new video for “When You Tell Me How It Is,”. On the track, Buckner combines his acoustic acumen with his more abstract leanings, using a looped synth sample to set a contrasting texture to his rich guitar tone and unadorned vocals. Word is, Richard spent the intervening years since his 2011 LP Our Blood (Merge) working on writing short stories, before returning to record music, and you can hear his efforts in the poetry of the lyrics here, as they alternate between the opaque and revealing. The video is directed by Sleepover Shows’ producer Robert Ribera, and shot around Buckner’s Kingston, NY home, it echoes the track by making awesome use of a detailed imagery that becomes almost abstracted by our proximity to it, producing that feeling of, as they say, “not being able to see the forest for the trees”.
