French drummer and electronic producer Emmanuel Mario records his own music under the name Astrobal, and his new EP Record Me Machine is out now on Plug Research. The 3-song EP is the follow-up to his excellent 2011 LP for the label, Poetry & Science Fiction. Mario introduces his new work saying,
“My cpu and I are proud to present new paths in our cognitive & sensitive relationship. The internal man/machine device helped me to be more attentive to my electronic partner and to develop along with it unknown feelings that we transform into music. Music from ancient times and music from the future, created for the brain and the heart. “And now, flow my tears”, the machine said.”
While the track “Spring” begins rather abstractly with it’s ping-ponging, computerized beat dominating the aural space, soon warmer tones flow into the mix with Mario’s slightly skewed vocals bringing a more human element against the bit-heavy beat. Astrobal’s time spent as a drummer, and his use of live drums with programmed beats gives the music a sensual, organic feel. The video for “Spring” was created by David Thayer, and using various forms of composited natural imagery, and a creative use of split screens, he creates an expressionistic and intensely colorful visual experience…
