New Video: Father John Misty “I’m Writing A Novel”

Father John Misty teams up with director Noel Paul again, in this new video for “I’m Writing A Novel“. Paul directed “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings“, which starred Aubrey Plaza, and here he uses a hilarious patchwork of footage to show off Josh Tillman‘s wry humor and frowzy charisma. Bearded, slightly disheveled, and often smoking, Tillman looks every bit the shambolic novelist on a bender, as he waxes poetic about a beautiful woman driving a hearse, or hint’s at the possibility of a larger metaphoric meaning for his work. As Tillman explained to Richard Metzger and Casey Wescott in Paula Zabrey’s Sub Pop write-up for Father John Misty,

“I lost all interest in writing music, or identifying as a songwriter. I got into my van with enough mushrooms to choke a horse and started driving down the coast with nowhere to go. After a few weeks, I was writing a novel, which is where I finally found my narrative voice. The voice that is actually useful.”

The result was the 2012 LP Fear Fun (Sub Pop), on which you can find the tracks “I’m Writing A Novel”, as well as “Hollywood Forever…”, but, really, I’m still hoping we’ll get some psychedelically inspired mess of a work like Dylan’s Tarantula! Ok, maybe not. Father John Misty hits the road again this October, so don’t miss the dates below!
