Body/Head is Kim Gordon‘s experimental music project with Bill Nace. Today we take a look at the extraordinary video series Richard Kern has completed for the project directing 10 videos–one for each track on Body/Head’s new 2xLP Coming Apart out now on Matador Records. Each one presents a looped tableau in which we the viewer is invited to observe, over and over, an eery and almost frozen moment.
Many of the videos like “Aint“, “Actress“, “Untitled“, or “Black” focus on a single male or female protagonist and in their unguarded moment we are able to watch them endlessly as voyeur. Though, before long, we begin to wonder if it’s not us being watched. Without the events surrounding this moment, Kern shifts our attention to the act of watching and being watched.
The only video which really strays from these parameters is “Last Mistress,” where a photographer straddles his model as she twists under his gaze, though, in many ways it is this conflict between observer and observed that lies at the heart of Kern’s amazing new video series.
