More from the Happy Jawbone Family Band…Today, the group debuted their new single “I Have To Speak With Rocky Balboa“, which will be on their upcoming self-titled LP due out October 15th on Mexican Summer. Dealing with the thornier side of masculine identity using a healthy dose of smart-ass and surreal humor, the band’s Luke Csehak provides some intimate background for the song explaining:
“This song is about Rocky Balboa the Sylvester Stallone character, but also it’s about a pig called Rocky Balboa. He was a pet pig that this old dude in Brattleboro would tie up in his yard, and on gallery walk he would take him out on the rope leash and introduce him to everybody. You could tell there was a real bond between man and pig. But then he had to kill the pig because he never castrated it, and I guess if you don’t castrate a pig they get to be all sexual and aggressive and they’re no fun to be around. I wanted to ask him if he ate the pig, but i didn’t know if that would hurt his feelings or not. But yeah, I thought a lot about that pig’s name and it got me thinking about masculine ideals and how they tend to end in desperation and loneliness. Like the NFL players who end up homeless addicts when they’re 50, the glory of the hero ideal is a disposable thing. Eventually you are left with a self that can never measure up to Rocky Balboa. With this song I was trying to get into that head-space, that desperate feeling where you just gotta leave town and go look for something that you probably won’t find but you just gotta go any way.”
