New Video: The Body “To Attempt Openness”

The Body‘s brutally wicked Christs, Redeemers LP, came out this week on Thrill Jockey, and it is already one of our favorite releases of 2013, so we are always excited to see one of it’s infernal cuts receiving a visual treatment! Choosing to sublimate the extreme gothic terror of “To Attempt Openness“, the video adopts a very intriguing strategy with a literal re-presenting of Alexander Barton‘s A Bleeding Picture, filmed by Alison Nguyen and Brett Harding. Shot in a starkly contrasted black and white, the video begins with a thick splash of blood-like liquid into a glass container, and while we can’t tell what it’s pouring from, we see that a benign tube seems to lead away from the container and upward. Soon the dark liquid is pumped up thru the tubing, and with a dynamic shift in the music our perspective turns to an imposing, almost anthropomorphic looking rectangle canvas, supported on two metal stands. With this longer view, we can now see that a tall glass jar has been filled with a black inky substance, and it is being pumped to the back of the canvas by a single tube that finally bifurcates, to create two slow dripping, blood-like strands down it’s front. Nguyen and Harding do a very interesting job in depicting this mostly static set-up by using a variety of straightforward and abstracted shots to build drama and tension into their depiction of A Bleeding Picture. The Body kicks off their US tour tomorrow night in Portland, so don’t miss the dates below.
