The prolific Australian musician and painter Mick Turner will release his Don’t Tell The Driver LP via Drag City on November 19th. Turner started his career in the late 70’s playing in the Melbourne-based band Sick Things, and he would go on to play in The Moodists (1983–1984), Fungus Brains (1982–1987), and Venom P. Stinger (1985-1996), before forming the band Dirty Three with drummer Jim White, and bassist/violinist Warren Ellis. Turner also releases solo work, and Don’t Tell the Driver will be his fourth such LP. The track “The Bird Catcher“, off the upcoming album, features an amazing spoken word performance from the actress Karen Black, given several years back before being diagnosed with cancer, and finally passing at the age of 74 this past August. Ms. Black appeared in numerous feature films between 1966 and 2009, including notable performances in Easy Rider, The Great Gatsby (1974), Nashville, and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. The video for “The Bird Catcher” was directed by Cam Archer, and shot by Darren Lew, and it features Karen Black in a striking, and completely abandoned performance made all-the-more achingly poignant by the fact that it was one her last.
