Several years back the Chicago psych rock quartet Cave loaded their gear up on a flatbed truck and drove around the city for some open air jamming. This time the boys piled their instruments, drums and organ included, into a small boat and cruised the Chicago River, playing tracks from their excellent October release, the Threace LP, out now on Drag City. Cameraman Mike Bingaman came along for the ride capturing footage of the band playing live, as well as the riverfront’s outstanding architecture, and on “Silver Headband” (this video has since been made “Private”, and has been removed from the post) and “Shikaakwa” he composites all this imagery to provide a light dose of expanded visuals. While both tracks are standouts from the new record, “Shikaakwa”, in particular, demonstrates how this band continues to push it’s playing into new territories, loosening up the groove, here, to find their funky side, while exploring the jazzier spectrum of the psych lexicon for this vintage fusion cool-out. Cave travels down under later this month, playing dates in New Zealand and Australia into December. You can check ’em out after the videos…
