Last week we took our first listen and look at I Dream of Wires, the new documentary that traces the history and recent resurgent interest in modular synthesizers, with Solvent‘s track “King Vincent“, as well as an extended interview with techno’s seminal producer Carl Craig. This week the film’s directors, Robert Fantinatto and musician Jason Amm, bring us an awesome clip from their interview with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Alessandro Cortini. The segment mostly covers Reznor’s take on the commercial development of synthesizers, in which he traces their history from the early glory days of Moog, thru the technologies’ nadir in the 90’s, with it’s glut of cheap electronic substitutes flooding the market; and on into the new century with the creation of digital plug-ins/patches expanding the technologies accessibility, as well as the current rebounding interest in modular hardware. The video also talks with Alessandro Cortini about his initial time with Nine Inch Nails, during the No Teeth days, and the opportunity it provided him to more fully explore the world of analogue synthesizers. Look for I Dream of Wires to receive a theatrical release in 2014, but serious fans can purchase on DVD/Blu-Ray the four-hour long Hardcore Edition, which is currently available via Science with Synthesizers. And, as if that was not enough, Jason Amm‘s musical project Solvent will release his New Ways: Music from the Documentary I Dream Of Wires LP on February 11th, via his own Suction Records label.
