FaltyDL calls his upcoming Ninja Tunes‘ release Danger “a spy-flick in a 10″”, and today we take a listen to the B-side with this cut “King Brute (Feat. Shanghai Den)“. While his music has always incorporated various elements of beat-oriented electronica, the NYC-based producer Drew Lustman seems intent upon shaking up any formulas he might have used in the past, opting now for a more intuitive and personal approach. He explains, “It’s about getting sounds I hear out of my head onto the software/synths I’m writing on. Filtering through the sounds in my subconscious.” And he adds, “This is the closest I’ve ever got.”
Indeed, in listening to “King Brute”, you can hear that Lustman has absorbed the formulas of drum-n-bass, jungle, garage, and dub-step to the point that they’ve become second nature, and while they form an underpinning to his production, the output has become completely his own. “King Brute” is moodier in nature than many of the tracks off his other Ninja Tunes release, 2012’s Hardcourage, and, here, the beat floor is a constantly shifting morass of simmering rhythms that filter in and out, while Lustman tweaks the echo on a crunchy dub fragment, pinging it around the room in variously impaired flight patterns!
