While Silent Lions may have spent 2013 high flying, but still under the radar, the duo is poised to make 2014 a breakout year! Today the band releases their new 6-song EP The Compartments (Nah Collective), as well as a second single off the record, “Runnin’ Me Down“…which also happens to be the album’s lead track. Silent Lions is built around the interplay between Dean Tartaglia on bass and Matt Klein on drums, and even within such a minimal set-up, the duo always manages to keep things interesting by creating a much varied music from an amalgamation of genres. “Runnin’ Me Down” is a great example of what the two are capable of, as it really showcases their inventive and adventurous song-craft, as well as their stellar sonic sense. As usual Tartaglia uses a host of various on-point bass tones to drive the track, opening with a slow simmering acoustic line, before brandishing something much heavier, and while the initial stripped down rhythm provides jazz-like accents, Klein soon joins Tartaglia with a driving, funky beat. “Runnin’ Me Down” moves between these different dynamics guided by Tartaglia’s mysterious lyrical track, and what sounds like a repeating vocal sample, but what is really intriguing is the way in which the duo progressively takes their sound towards the chaotic, before being able to instantly right the course with a hard left hook! Silent Lions are currently making their way across the Midwest for a string of live dates, as they head East, before returning to Ohio early in February for a few last shows.
