Watch: Golden Retriever “Flight Song”

Golden Retriever‘s second Thrill Jockey release, the Seer LP, is out now, and the “vinyl only” release has been pressed to virgin wax. The Portland-based duo is composed of Matt Carlson on modular synthesizer and Jonathan Sielaff on bass clarinet, and their melding of acoustic and electronic music, coupled with their meticulous attention to sonic details, is definitely deserving of such high audio fidelity! Recorded over a two year period at the duo’s Worksound studio in Portland, Carlson and Sielaff combine an exacting ear with an open approach to craft a creatively challenging and emotionally charged music that invites both inquiry and absorption. “Flight Song” uses interweaving and “classically” toned synth lines to create it’s initial updraft, before the bright, glowing tones of the bass clarinet send everything gliding and soaring towards exalted heights. The video for the track is from the designer and photographer Lysandre Follet, and using a simple but iconic palette of 8-bit-like graphic elements that includes patterns of dots, curving string lines, and glowing triangles, the artist has created vintage-looking video game screens that seem to have been appropriated for more hypnotic and artful ends!
