Watch: The Altered Hours “Dig Early”

The stellar Irish psych band The Altered Hours have a new single and video for “Dig Early“, which will be available on 7” vinyl via Art for Blind Records on April 21st. Last year’s “Sweet Jelly Roll” was one of our favorite tracks and videos for 2013, and if it’s lysergic vibrations of shoe-gaze shimmered with singer Elaine Howley‘s candied opulence, “Dig Early” is a beast of quite a different nature! Building layers of scraping metal tension around a tightly wound and urgent post-punk guitar line, as well as a relentlessly driving rhythm core, the track’s striking lyrics, “Sometimes I feel like I could dig an early grave / sometimes I wish that I could lie down and feel safe”, finish the stark mood, here, with their unnerving honesty. The video for “Dig Early” was done by Mary Kelleher, Izabella Szczutkowska and the band’s Elaine Howley, and it juxtaposes black and white performance footage shot at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork, with colorful, sun streaked images of sky and water filmed on the roads of Clare. The Altered Hours will play some live shows around Ireland starting later this month, so check the dates after the video embed.
