James Donadio returns with his Prostitutes project, and this week the artist released his third LP, Petit Cochon, out now via Spectrum Spools. The follow-up to last year’s excellent Crushed Interiors release on Digitalis, Petit Cochon finds Donadio continuing to delve into the deep tectonic structures of techno; but, what is most intriguing is his stylistic ability to drain the genre of air, leaving just enough oxygen for a modicum of human life. The result, however, still maintains thrillingly physical and kinetic qualities, such that even on the tracks where beats have been pared down to their bare essentials, an unmistakable throb of organic life remains. Petit Cochon explores lunar and solar territories, meaning that the tracks display varying degrees of introverted and extroverted qualities. More ambient cuts like “Powerful Magnets“, “Tube Without Exit“, “A Number Between Their Eyes“, or the album’s outstanding closer “Four Basic Forces“, offer a more contemplative reprieve by which to observe,…well, those four basic forces; while jungle-tinged tracks like “The Bluffer’s Corporation“, “Build Your Kits“, “Suck Out the Reason“, “Cylindrical Habitat“, and the broken beat meltdown of “Stains Left Unnamed“, are full of athletic footwork, demanding a vigorous, physical response!
