Jamie xx‘s productions, for me, have always stood out for their use of negative space, so I love that the new video for “Sleep Sound“, directed by Sofia Mattioli and Cherise Payne, begins with the simple statement: “Music is a medium formed by silence and sound”. The text goes on to explain that the concept for the video was initially informed by an experience with a deaf girl on a train. The narrator tells us that she had been listening to music when, “a girl who had been staring at me for a while handed me a note explaining that she was deaf and could almost feel the music by watching me”. Building upon this notion, this beautifully conceived video finds the directors joining forces with The Manchester Deaf Center, and using dance and movement as the most natural, human expression of emotion, it explores: “how music can be created by only having silence and creating sound with the use of imagination”.
