Watch: CoH “eena ferroix” & “BEAT TO WAVE”

1727

This week the experimental sound artist and musician Ivan Pavlov, aka COH, returned with his To Beat LP via Editions Mego, and today we take a look at his videos for “eena ferroix” and “BEAT TO WAVE“. “eena ferroix” gives direction credits to the filmmakers Julieta Triangular and Marianne Lois Iron, who has also directed a video for the album’s closing track “BEAT TO WAVE”; but, stylistically, this first video demonstrates Triangular’s penchant for lo-fi, Super 8 imagery, as well as her admiration for the experimental and surreal films of Jack Smith. Following a singular dream logic, the video mixes grainy nature footage with a smattering of strangely colored visual ephemera that includes transfixing, pink scenes with a mysteriously shrouded figure. For “BEAT TO WAVE“, Iron continues with the pair’s painterly fascinations for color and texture, and, according to the artist, the video was inspired by Erwin Blumenfeld‘s photography and Henri-Georges Clouzot‘s abandoned film L’Enfer. Using various representational and abstracted visual approaches, the video focuses, often in tight close-up, on an androgynous gyrating figure; and the resulting series of images seem to alternately pulse with sweaty physicality, and the ethereal realities that lie just below it’s surface!
