Lower have a very intriguing new video for their track “Soft Option“, which will be on the band’s upcoming LP Seek Warmer Climes, due out June 17th via Matador/Escho. Like much of the music coming out of this fresh new wave of European post-punk, bands like Savages, Iceage, Holograms, etc., there’s a passionate, human engagement to the work, something that might even be called political, though rarely in an overt way; and most often, as with the band Lower, it’s about personal and inter-personal politics. On “Soft Option“, and “Bastard Tactics” before it, singer Adrian Toubro‘s lyrics are finely tuned to the sub-conscious machinations of our personal engagements, and really, at the heart of things, are imbued with the moral implications of those relationships. Director Kristian Emdal takes a very interesting tact in on that for his “Soft Option” video, filming the band seated around a table in what seems to be, if the lyrics have it right, a tense debate; but Emdal chooses instead to focus on the oblique, silent moments between converstion, suggesting the parts of this heated dialogue which can’t be spoken…Or, heck, maybe the guys are just deciding on what to get for take-out!
