Death Grips continue their prolific run with an upcoming 2xLP called the powers that b, scheduled for release sometime later this year via Harvest/Third Worlds Records. Again proving data just wants to be FREE, the band has made the first album, niggas on the moon, available for download, while also announcing that all 8 tracks feature Björk. And indeed, while that assertion sounds almost unbelievable, she has confirmed it via Facebook, saying:
“i am proud to announce my vocals landed on the new death grips album ! i adore death grips and i am thrilled to be their “found object” !”
Though, in typical Death Grips fashion, and with a wicked sense of wit, her vocal contributions are hardly recognizable, except on “Big Dipper“, the album’s closer; and here, they are just barely teased out as the track finishes. Otherwise, her voice does appear as a “found object”, sampled almost beyond recognition, and often serving as one more rhythmic element, in what are already often dense, hectic Jungle-like beat structures. Meanwhile, MC Ride continues to amaze with his singular vocal style, and while his delivery across niggas on the moon is characteristically unhinged, his stream-of-consciousness rants, rife with their surreal poetry and punk attitude, are dialed back a bit more than on past efforts, making them less one-dimensional, and revealing that beneath the madness, truly lies a deeper method!
Death Grips head out on the road this summer with NIN and Soundgarden, as well as playing the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, so here are the dates…
