Apex Twin will release Syro (Warp Records) on September 23rd, his first LP of new work since 2001’s Drukqs. Sure, it’s already been a busy and lucrative year for James with the long awaited release of his ambient masterpiece Caustic Window finally seeing the light of day thru a Kickstarter campaign, as well as a rare test press of the album selling for $46,300 to Minecraft video game creator Markus “Notch” Persson.
News of the upcoming record began to mount earlier this month when a green blimp bearing an Aphex Twin logo and the year “2014” was spotted in London over the Oval Space, while in the meanwhile the same logo was appearing on sidewalks outside New York’s Radio City Music Hall and other locations around town. Later that week, Aphex Twin’s Richard D. James tweeted news of the album via a URL that could only be accessed on the Deep Web using the TOR browser, and the address included the image of James that you see below with a track list for the LP.
Today, Pitchfork has teased more news about Syro revealing some nuggets of info from Philip Sherburne‘s interview with the artist. For instance, James informs us that the music on Syro was made using “electro-mechanical instruments including MIDI pipe organs, a Disklavier controlled piano, and computer-controlled percussion.” Additionally, the various strange and unintelligible voices that can be heard throughout are his own, as well as the voices of his children, wife, and parents. A real family affair you might say! So, without further ado, back into the strange and warped world of Apex Twin…
