Anna Mayberry plays a tumultuous form of noise punk with her mates in HSY, but as Anamai the Toronto-based musician explores the freakier side of folk on her self-titled, debut EP. Produced by her friend David Psutka (Egyptrixx, Hiawatha), the lead track “Altar Coals” really shows off what she does best on the recent release, as it blends a trippy and strummed shoegaze with boozy blues, while Mayberry spins yarns in her slightly warped and twangy warble. The video for the track is directed by Eric James Mayer, and it collages archival-type film of a NY snow storm, as we watch 16mm images of the city digging itself out from underneath at least a foot of snow, while the kiddies play!
