The Manchester-based producer Andy Stott will release his Faith In Strangers LP via Modern Love on November 18th. Knowing the album was on the way, I was stoked to see him perform live in Seattle at this year’s Decibel Festival, and the acoustics and giant cathedral-like surroundings at EMP’s Level Three where ideal for taking in Stott’s spacious, deep bass dub and techno. Today we check out the UK artist’s newest single off his upcoming record, the album’s title track “Faith In Strangers“. Stott is a master at composing with bass and drum, and in his hands this limited palette has amazing, evocative powers, as this cut reveals. Starting with a catatonically slowed heart beat rhythm, Stott’s womb-like atmosphere is soon invaded by an acidic array of cymbal and snare, while pensive keys and double bass do their best to maintain the amniotic mood. Eventually the opera singer Alison Skidmore casts her lovely vocal reflections across the track, and the introspective and crepuscular meeting of bass and keys here, provide the perfect aquatic surface for her lunar crooning!
