Listen: Horse Lords “Outer East”

Baltimore’s eclectic, instrumental quartet Horse Lords will release their Hidden Cities LP on November 4th via NNA Tapes. “Outer East” is the first listen in on the band’s sophomore effort, and it finds them doing what they do best, blurring the lines between post-punk and krautrock in intricate, long-form jams. Billowing forth like cosmic wind, this track’s initial deep space ambience is first broken by drummer Sam Haberman‘s stuttering, motorik beat, before guitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist Andrew Bernstein weave a gnarled braid of sound around Gardner’s tightly bristling punk phrasing, and Bernstein’s delayed and compounding patterns of horn. But, with a running time of thirteen minutes, this track is on walkabout, and as it travels deeper into the wilderness, various sonic layers reaveal and express themselves in all their polyphonic delight, until about half way in, when bassist Max Eilbacher knots the group back together in a tight, funky groove, before they all “peace out” into an exuberant, face melting jam!
