Dope Body is doing it’s part to keep America weird and wild, so what the f*** are you doin? Maryland’s grunge punks returned this week with a brand new slab of sonic sleaze, Lifer, and it’s out now on Drag City. Get a load of “Repo Man“, with it’s nearly two-minute intro setting the testosterone fueled mood by laying down a tangle of brawling drums, thuggish, strutting bass, and peel-outs of muscle car guitar. After this frenetic fire storm cools out, the track gets it’s second wind with a slower, more blues slurred approach that simmers in cinematic stretches, before going back into head first attack mode. Meanwhile, vocalist Andrew Laumann‘s whiskey smoked growls and howls remind one of the golden days of grunge, conjuring up gruff crooners like Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley.
The video treatment for “Repo Man” was written by Laumann and director Theo Anthony, and it’s use of vintage VHS footage and suburban wasteland imagery casts a real Gummo mood to things. There might be a loose story here, but the real strength of the video lies in the volatile presence of it’s male lead. First seen shirtless, taunting the fleeing camera, he’s the perfect match for this track’s hard edge, and his presence provides a unifying thread throughout “Repo Man”‘s delirious jumble of adrenalized imagery.
