Fans of cold wave and vintage synth-pop will find much to love about Orchide Noire. It’s been a prolific year already for the French musician/lyricist Xavier Soquet, and this Fall seems to be no exception. The busy artist released two new instrumental tracks, “Nuit inacheve” and “Curs de faence” in September and October, as well as November’s vocal track “Ab imo pectore“, and this, his most recent release, “De vous toi“, a collaboration with Coco Gallo of Peine Perdue. Noir tones of bass gloom arpeggiate right from the start when “De vous toi”‘s downward descending, 3-note synth pattern opens the basement door on a kick and snare drum engaged in a numbed and lurid exchange. The track features Gallo’s crepuscular, plain spoken vocal delivery, and she provides the perfect compliment to Soquet’s suave cantillation and Symbolist-inspired poetry.
