The Brooklyn psych-rock trio Rhyton has a new LP, Kykeon, out now on Thrill Jockey. Melding a ritualized intent to modern means, the band draws deeply from Greek and Middle Eastern influences in concocting their heady sonic brew. “Kykeon” is the Greek word for “to stir, to mix”, but it was also a potent, psychoactive libation used to celebrate the Eleusian Mysteries. Indeed, “California Black Box Vapors” is sure to intoxicate as it unleashes it’s wild, hypnotic throb of bass and drum, while bouzouki/electro-saz/guitar player David Shuford sends off cosmic firestorms of black, flaming noise! The video for the track was directed by Richard Daniel Cohen, and here he uses both Super 8 and HD to weave a twisted mix of images, as the band seems engaged in some quasi-ritualistic activities like, everyone’s favorite, self-flagellation. Rhyton will play two upcoming East coast live dates in December, so here they are…
