Leave it to Torn Hawk‘s Luke Wyatt to reflect back to us, in that queasy and sometimes cringe inducing way of his, the half conscious fantasies of male culture. Here, he drops a real doozy. “Because of M.A.S.K.“‘s female protagonist begins as a daunting, and seemingly unattainable advertising image plastered on public walls. Like some beautiful model at an Erotic Fantasy Convention, she dons a white jumpsuit and ornate sword, with alien, whited-over eyes; and when she magically appears in a used book store, the video’s male character puts her over his shoulder and takes her home. Here, he molds her doll like form into whatever positions he desires, even stuffing paper with the word “M.A.S.K.” written on it into her mouth, while capturing all of this with his Polaroid. Whether this is some sort of comment on male desire, or peek inside Torn Hawk’s twisted mind, this artist seems to relish when the two come together as uncomfortable bed fellows! You can find “Because of M.A.S.K.” on Torn Hawk’s new LP Let’s Cry And Do Pushups At The Same Time, out now on Mexican Summer.
