Canadian electro-acoustic composer Sarah Davachi will release her debut LP Barons Court on February 17th via the drone/ambient/improvisational label Students of Decay. Davachi holds a master’s degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California, and her drone based work often features vintage modular and analogue synthesizers like Buchla’s 200 and Music Easel, Sequential Circuit’s Prophet 5, and the EMS Synthi AKS. On Barons Court, she also utilizes acoustic instruments like cello, flue, harmonium, oboe, and viola. This LP sampler includes the tracks “heliotrope“, “tiergarten“, and “wood green“, and they demonstrate the musician’s abiding interest in an ambient and durational music that explores tone and texture through gradual and patient sonic transformations. While one might expect the results to be celestial and space age in scope, considering the ambient form and iconic, analogue instrumentation; instead, as the song titles might suggest, the results are pastoral and atavistic in the best of ways.
