Since the early 90’s, the UK psych band The Heads have released over twenty full-lengths, recorded radio sessions with the likes of John Peel and Mark Radcliffe, while cultivating near legendary status in the realms of stoner and psych rock. Earlier today we caught up with the band’s Paul Allen, and his trio Anthroprophh, listening to that group’s new record U.F.O. (Cardinal Fuzz/Captcha Records); so, let’s now take time with The Head’s other guitarist/vocalist Simon Price, and his recording project kandodo. Price released his second LP, k2o (Thrill Jockey), under the moniker back in 2013, and now we have this new video for “July 28th“, off the album. Using a Fender Mustang and microKORG, k2o was recorded over a three year period at various locations including Bristol, London, Memphis, and the Italian coastline. Like much of The Heads’ work, Thrill Jockey reports that portions of the 2013 album were recorded on Price’s Walkman, with the album’s epic closing track, “swim into the sun“, actually built over a two year period from over-dubbed layering to the device.
“July 28th” is a great example of the kind of searing, mantra-like sonics that Price does so well; and the visuals for the track, with their looped, shadowy figure and psychedelic backgrounds, as well as eye melting, neon saturated colors, are an excellent analogue for this nodding excursion into Dreamtime.
