London-based producer Joăo Pimenta, aka Silvestre, will release his debut EP Frank Pike on February 16th via Diskotopia. On the album’s title track, he reveals a stark, moody take on techno that emphasizes texture and atmosphere, as much as rhythm. Woozy, upwardly-expanding key tones open the cut, before “Frank Pike” enters with a loping, rhythmic gate. Later, Pimenta’s industrially toned palette meets high speed piano runs, while the track goes through several rounds of jaw clenching ascension and release–only to mellow out into a more dubby coda. Video honors, here, go to fellow Diskotopia label-mate and co-founder A Taut Line, who delivers over-layed patterns of cracked cement and brick with equally distressed buildingscapes, using occasional pulses of color treated video to accent the mostly black and white footage.
