Grey People, aka Alex Michalski, provides CGI Records‘ first release of 2015, with his new Trench Foot EP. Born and raised in Chicago, the DJ/producer now makes his home in Nashville; and while Michalski has put out music on some very cool electronic labels like Proper Trax, Mystical Disco, and Cult Trip, this is his first on the Atlanta-based label, CGI Records. (Though, the producer also pairs with Daniel Lewis as Lyman-Alpha Forest, and the duo released a split 12″ with Afterburner on the label last year).
Here, the two cuts on the A-side, “Trench Foot” and “Moonstruck“, are both smudged up with audio grit, as Michalski pushes his drum and bass lines to their max for an almost blown-out sound. Dizzying synth lines speed thru the first track, while the second has a more new wave feel; though, both cuts continually punish with a hard driving techno kick. On the B-side, “Lock the Box” cools things down a bit, but still simmers with late night desire and a stylish, buttoned-down demeanor. The EP’s closer, “Wild Intentions“, kicks the heat back up with a sweaty, bass funk slapped over athletic rhythm lines, and melancholy horn tones hovering in the corners.
